NewsChannel 9 has confirmed that one man is dead following a freak accident on South Crest Road near I-24.
The scene is on top of the bridge that spans the freeway.
According to Chattanooga police officers a steel cable was dangling from the bridge, which is being sand blasted and painted, and was hanging too low into westbound traffic. Two large trucks traveling on the freeway struck the steel cable, causing it to whip around. The cable struck and took down a utility pole used by TDOT for it's interstate camera system, then flew up to the top of the bridge where it hit two men walking on top of the bridge.
One died instantly, the other was taken by Hamilton County EMS to Erlanger Medical Center reportedly with a broken arm and head injuries.
The two trucks that hit the cable were stopped and being inspected by police traffic investigators, which caused traffic in both directions to slow down. .
South Seminole Drive over I-24 will be closed for a couple hours this afternoon.
