On Friday, Gordon County sheriff's investigators updated the case of a shooting and kidnapping that ended with the suspect being shot. Investigators identified the key players in the case.
Paul Buchannon, a suspect in a shooting, kidnapping and murder was shot and is hospitalized following by a massive manhunt in North Georgia. It all began around 6 p.m. Thursday. Gordon County deputies were called to a shooting involving several victims at 2511 US Highway 41 near Resaca in northern Gordon County.
Officers found two men, 19 and 17, had been shot by a then-unidentified man said to be armed with a handgun. One man of the men, Cody Shawn Adams, was shot in the back, and the other, Dustin Lee Henderson, in his leg.
Adams remains in the Hamilton Medical Center. Henderson was released from Gordon Hospital.
Witnesses told detectives that a woman, Christy Ann McKnight of Calhoun, was kidnapped from the home and forced into a black, Chevrolet 'Camaro' by the gunman who then fled north on US Highway 41. The witnesses also told detectives that the gunman was threatening McKnight as he took her away.
Deputies say they identified the gunman as Buchannon, 38, believed to have been living at the Royal Motel on Highway 53 in Calhoun. Detectives were able to track McKnight's cellular telephone signal to a remote location near the Hill City community near the Whitfield County line in extreme northern Gordon County. Deputies found the black 'Camaro' parked next to the railroad tracks near Hill City Road. A cellular telephone was found in the unoccupied car. Deputies began a ground search and soon thereafter found McKnight's body on the railroad tracks several hundred yards north of the car. She had been killed by an apparent gunshot to the head.
The Gordon County Sheriffs Office called for assistance from numerous surrounding agencies as well as a helicopter from the Georgia Aviation Authority. Dozens of heavily armed officers formed a perimeter about the area. The manhunt continued as darkness fell.
At 9:50 p.m. a search team consisting of a Georgia DOC officer with a bloodhound and deputy sheriffs from Whitfield County confronted Buchannon in a thickly wooded area near the Hill City crossroads. They say Buchannon threatened the officers with his pistol and he was shot several times.
Friday, the GBI called the incident "as dangerous a situation as you could ask for."
Officers say the handgun recovered from Buchannon is believed to be the same gun involved in the shooting of the three victims earlier. No officers were injured.
Buchannon was flown by helicopter to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. His condition is unknown.
The officer-involved shooting is being separately investigated by the GBI, as is routine in such matters. The identity of the officers involved is not being released at this time.
If he survives, Buchannon will be charged with Murder, Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, and firearms violations. Police say Buchannon has previous arrests for domestic violence - related incidents.
