Attorney: Paralyzed inmate not getting treatment
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Nashville lawyer says he's concerned his paralyzed client is not getting the treatment he needs after he was arrested for trying to run over a police officer with a car.
Prison officials said that mistakes have been made, but insist no one is intentionally withholding care from 52-year-old Michael Smith.
Nashville police arrested Smith in April after he struck Officer Chad Barth in a parking garage. Barth fired several shots and clipped Smith's spinal cord, paralyzing him from the waist down.
Tennessee Department of Corrections commissioner Gayle Ray acknowledged to Smith's lawyer David King that his client has missed two medical appointments because of transportation issues.
King told The Tennessean his client has not been transported to court for an initial hearing months after being charged.
