Bomb Squad Called to Local Restaurant for Suspicious Package

May 4, 2008 - 6:28 PM

The Chattanooga Bomb Squad is called out to remove a suspicious package from an East Ridge Restaurant.

East Ridge Police and Fire and Rescue Squads responded to the restaurant on Ringgold Road around 10 a.m Sunday when a caller reported a suspicious box near the front of the business. Spokesperson Erik Hopkins says they found a military-style ammunition can sitting near the front door with a note attached to it.

Police and Fire personnel quickly evacuated the area, and called the bomb squad. The bomb squad used a robot to move the box to a safe location, and then used a water cannon to open the package.

Hopkins say the package contained blasting caps and other explosive material that could cause an explosion. The box and material have been placed into evidence.

Investigators are not releasing the content of the note at this time.

Hopkins says they're working on several leads, and they're asking anyone with information about the incident to call police immediately.
