Shopper's Green Helping Retailers out of the Red?
Retailers across the country are hoping to get out of the red and into the black after shoppers dish out the green. It's the biggest shopping day of the year but with the economy at one of the lowest in our time how will the stores fare?
NewsChannel 9's Erica Green has more on Black Friday.
Shoppers rang in Black Friday with tons of steam...despite the rocky economic times stores like Best Buy were flooded with people. We found a shopper braving the cold this dark morning looking for deals for the first time with his entire family of 7.
"Saving as much money as we can that's it," said Mike Espino.
We spoke to a shopper who woke up extra early and hit the stores before work, like Espino, Scot McGill. says he's looking to save more money than usual this year.
"I have 3 kids and we normally spend $500-$600 on them and it will probably go down to around $400 a piece," said McGill
Some of the hot items on the top of many wish lists: blue ray disc players, flat screen t-vs and laptops, the door buster deals ran out early but the lines stuck around.
The manager at Best Buy says about 160 people were in line at 3 am. We found someone who got out of bed just after midnight to wait in that line. We wanted to find out exactly what he was thinking.
"Part of the season. It was a lot of fun. We danced," said Jamie Mills.
But no one cashed in like Kyle Cashen, who worked at this electronic store for 2 years and had an insider's look on how to buy on black Friday.
" The prices are constantly going down which is great and no really super new technology has come out so that's helped out a little bit. Even someone like a broke college student can afford a nice tv or whatever you're looking for," said Cashen.
Some stores say they sold out of products just 2 hours after they opened and they hope today's sales will bring them out of the red and into the black especially this year when layoffs going out of business are a very real possibility.
Many stores are staying open late tonight and offer online deals until Saturday. For more and a list of the top 10 best deals log on to: http://www.pcworld.com/article/154122/the_best_black_friday_deals_2008.html.
