Emergency officials say 24 killed by storms in Tennessee

Tennessee emergency officials say the death toll from storms across the state has risen to 24.

Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Randy Harris says that at least 10 fatalities have now been reported in Macon County, along the Kentucky border northeast of Nashville.

He says about 150 people have been injured. But there is no estimate on how much damage the line of storms that struck the state Tuesday night and Wednesday morning may have caused.

Authorities in Macon County were still searching door to door across the rural area to find more victims.

He says, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to every Tennessean impacted last night by the storms, particularly those whose loved ones were injured or killed. We are continuing today to be in communication with Governor Bredesen and with local officials, and will do everything within our ability to respond to the needs of the Tennesseans and the communities affected in a comprehensive and timely fashion. We urge everyone today who may be affected by additional storms to take proper precautions and consider safety first.”
