Teach Here Deadline Approaches

Hamilton County is looking for 20 teachers to step into their schools...no classroom experience required.
The Teach Here program recruits college graduates who majored in math or science or professionals in those fields who are hoping to teach.
Twenty new recruits will be paired up with a master teacher four days in the classroom and spend the fifth day taking classes from UT to earn a masters degree and teaching certificate.

"Teacher turnover is a real problem," says Hamilton County Superintendent Dr. Jim Scales.  "Many new teachers leave before their 3rd year - mostly because they were not adequately prepared to handle a classroom.  This residency program will give teachers a really solid start so that they are very well-prepared when they take over a classroom of their own.  We know that in other communities that have implemented teacher residency programs, the retention rate rises to over 90%.  That is a win-win - it saves money, and it boosts instruction for students."

The deadline to apply is April 16th and the program is expected to be up and running this summer.
