Bessie Smith Burglary Suspect Charged
Chattanooga Police have identified the suspect involved in the burglary of the Bessie Smith Hall on June 10th.
Police spokesperson Timothy McFarland said Torrey Lamar Hines turned himself in Monday and confessed to his role in the burglary. He is charged with burglary, vandalism and theft over $50,000. McFarland said the investigation into the case is ongoing
Bessie Smith Cultural Center President Rose Martin said the burglary hurt their efforts to educate, preserve and protect the African American history of the city. She said some people have made contributions to help make up for the theft.
