Chatsworth Man Convicted of Child Molestation
After only 20 minutes of deliberation, a Murray County, Ga. jury convicted Darrel Wayne Abercrombie, 39, of two counts of child molestation Wednesday.
The trial began Monday afternoon. Assistant District Attorney Ben Kenemer called 14 witnesses, including three victims.
Only one person testified in Abercrombie's defense.
Abercrombie will be sentenced Aug. 20 and faces 5-20 years in prison on each count.
Abercrombie was arrested in March of 2012 after the victims reported the molestation to their stepmother and grandmother. Abercrombie denied the allegations when questioned. However detectives said they learned that he had previously made statements to an aunt, admitting that he had become a sexual predator after having been abused himself as a child.
Prosecutors said the case took longer than normal to bring to trial because one of the investigators, a critical witness in the case, was gone from September of 2012 through September of 2013 while serving in Afghanistan.
