A Chattanooga man is recovering after a robber stabbed him in the back at the bus stop near the Bi-Lo at 3800 Hixson Pike
Police say it happened Tuesday night at about 9:30.
22-year-old Phani Tangirala tells police he just got off shift at a nearby gas station and walked to the nearby bus stop.
While he was waiting for the bus, a man approached him from the wooded area behind him. He demanded money from Tangirala, and stabbed him in the abdomen below his left rib cage. The man was able to steal hundreds of dollars from Tangirala's wallet. He then ran back into the woods.
Officers who were called to the scene searched that wooded area but didn't find the robber.
Tangirala was taken to the hospital, and he's expected to recover from his wounds.
He described the suspect to police as a man of unknown race, 5'10 to 6' feet tall, dressed in all black, with a black scarf covering his face, and smelling strongly of marijuana. He believed the man stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
