A chilling recording captures the moments just before yesterday's plane crash. Around 3:15 PM, pilot Don Edens of Lake City, TN radioed in asking for help in locating the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport runway.
"I got oil all over my windshield. I'm going to need help lining up," says Edens.
Dispatch redirected the pilot to a closer airport in Collegedale just a mile from where he lost control. The pilot responds unable to locate any markers. "We're not going to make it. I can't see. I can't see that either sir."
After one last effort, the pilot appeared to lose hope. "We're not going to make it."
And that was the last thing the pilot said before the single-engine plane that came from a kit dove into a field.
Thursday, investigators poured over the 500 square feet scene off of Ooltewah Industrial Drive hoping to find some sort of answers.
NTSB Investigators like Sean Etcher only respond crashes that prove to be deadly. In this case, he says the Experimental Amateur Lancair IV-P will have to go through extensive processing before any preliminary findings.
"We always want to look at everything from the man, the machine, and the environment. The machine being the airplane. We want to know if everything was working fine and if anything was wrong with it and looking at that will help us know if there was any problems. Right now we're documenting the scene, taking measurements, documenting where it came to rest, getting it ready for transport."
