A Collegedale artist is waiting on one final step of approval before beginning on a big 3-part mural project in our community.
It's called the Greenway Mural Project. Professional artist Alex Loza took us inside his studio.
He says he's planning on painting three different murals. The first will honor of veterans, the second will be in honor of Native Americans, and the final one will depict families doing everyday things.
Loza says he's been interested in art all his life. But his professional career didn't start until one of his art teachers submitted some of his artwork to a contest without telling him. He ended up winning, and his teacher ensured him he had a future in art.
He's worked professionally for 15 years. He's also an art professor at Lee University. He told us what art means to him; it's not just a hobby. He said, "[Itas] Life, dreams, and communication.a
He says he's better at communicating visually rather than verbally, and doing art gives him fulfillment. That's why he's hoping to spread his love for art with others, by getting the community together for this mural project.
He'll be asking artists of all ages to contribute to the paintings once everything is approved.
Loza tells us, "It's mostly to honor our community. And unify them at the same. By putting a beautiful piece of art with nice colors it will enhance the area but at the same time might restrict people from doing grafhitti.a
Loza says the next step is waiting on approval from the TDOT, which he hopes will come soon. From there the first mural honoring veterans will begin.
