An out-of-control teen fight inside of Hamilton Place Mall last Thursday has some people wondering whether unarmed guards are enough to keep everyone safe.
The scuffle was all caught on tape and we're hearing from mall workers and shoppers about security.
The dramatic cell phone shows several unarmed security guards standing around watching what appear to be two teen girls scuffling.
In the video, you see a girl dragging the other by her hair, then hitting her in the face. The whole time, the guards are struggling, then eventually you see a girl take down one of those girls.
The manager of a shoe store inside Hamilton Place mall shared the video with us. He told NewsChannel 9 that he believes the mall guards can't handle large fights.
He refused an on-camera interview, but we spoke to Carmen Smeltzer who works at a sunglass hut inside the mall and also saw the fight.
"I've never seen a fight that before and it was kind of scary, especially like working in the mall," said Smeltzer.
Even scarier - she says - knowing several security guards were unable to break it up.
"I saw one guard and he was really struggling and they were saying get more guards, get more guards because obviously they're not handling it properly or they can't handle it properly," said Smeltzer.
She's worked at Hamilton Place Mall for 2-years. Watching the video has her concerned about safety and wondering if the guards should be armed.
"Just having someone who can protect you and you feel safe around when you're working with money and property and stuff like that," said Smeltzer
A Hamilton Place Mall spokesperson told NewsChannel 9 they can't release details about their security practices, but gave us this statement which reads, "We take all incidents seriously and have security procedures in place for any occurrence. We are not in a position to discuss these policies as that would compromise our security efforts."
Watching the video has shoppers like Chelsie Zellars concerned.
"I don't see why they couldn't handle it, it was just a couple teenage girls, they must need more training or something," said Zellars.
Those two teen girls who were in the fight, ran away afterward. That's according to a Hamilton Place Mall spokesperson.
