Chief Reacts to Deadly Shooting on Foust Street
Chattanooga Police say a deadly shooting happened at a home at 2108 Foust Street early Thursday morning.

Shortly after it happened, people came out of their homes and on to the street to see what was happening. One woman nearly collapsing after seeing the body of Dominic Wright.

Police taped off the house.

"The first thing that's important is to control the scene," said Capt. David Woosley of the Chattanooga Police Department, "to make sure we don't lose any evidence or contaminate the scene."

Neighbors say they heard one gun shot, followed by four other shots several seconds later.

This deadly shooting is the 19th homicide of the year, which ties the total number of homicides in 2013.

"It's unacceptable," said Fred Fletcher, Chattanooga's Chief of Police.

We spoke with Fletcher at a community meet and greet, which he was attending in between visits to the crime scene.

"When somebody's son or father or brother gets killed, it's important to us," said Fletcher, "people are not statistics, they are individuals that have value."

"I was scared, I was shaking, I was frightened, I was almost in tears," said Yolanda Besley.

Besley runs a daycare on Foust St. just two houses down from where the shooting happened. She says her street has no place for violence.

"I want them to know that they should take it somewhere else because there is kids out here," said Besley, "and they have nothing to do with what's going on."

Besley says she has always felt safe, and parents don't need to worry.

"They don't have no reason to be frightened to bring their kids to the daycare," said Besley, "we are secure."

But for police, strengthening that security means getting help from those closest to the violence.

"What we're tired of is people being hurt in our community and we're tired of people losing sons and daughters and parents," said Fletcher, "and we're committed to working with the community to get information to solve these."

Wright was 22 years old and grew up on Foust street, but had moved away.

Police say they are still searching for a silver Cadillac that may have been the get away car.
