Numbers are climbing for fatal crashes in Tennessee, and a chunk of those statistics include people who were not wearing seat belts.
Just across state lines in Georgia, a Hixson woman was thrown from her car and died in a weekend crash. Troopers said she wasn't wearing a seat belt. Some drivers admitted they don't always wear one.
"I'd say 75 percent of the time because sometimes I'm in a rush," said Housen McKeldin, a Chattanooga high school student. "Sometimes I'm on my way to work. I'm in a rush, sometimes late."
Some drivers said not wearing a restraint is risky.
"I feel like they are taking a chance by not wearing it. I think it's safety, and I think it really helps to wear it," said Mary Myers, of Chattanooga.
Across Tennessee more people were killed when they didn't use a seat belt. According to numbers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 311 people who wore a seatbelt died in 2013 compared to 249 so far this year. As for drivers who didn't wear one, more than 400 fatal crashes happened last year and about 300 deaths to date for 2013.
"(It's) neglect. (People) don't care. They don't care about their own safety, I don't reckon," said Robert Parker, of Dalton, Ga. "I do. Like I say, I drive a truck every day, so I have to wear mine. (My truck) won't shut up either unless I put it on, and it's annoying to just sit there and let it beep."
Aside from reminders inside a car, law enforcement officers stressed that seat belt use is the law.
"(Drivers) say that it has hurt them wearing a seat belt more than it has helped. And that could be true in some small cases, in a minority of cases, but for the majority, those warnings are there for our safety," said Evie West, of the Cleveland Police Department.
When passing warnings signs posted on the highway, McKeldin said he will think twice about his safety.
"It just makes me think about how easy it is to lose your life in a car wreck," said McKeldin. "I think it's very important because I've had friends who have lost their lives, and I'm only in high school. I already know people who have lost their lives over wrecks without having seatbelts on."
Another driver said off camera he doesn't wear a seat belt because of a traumatic crash when he was a teenager, and he couldn't escape because his seat belt was stuck.By Briona Arradondo
