Fireworks the Likely Cause for House Fire
A man is blaming a group of rowdy teens playing with fireworks for setting a house on fire Friday night. Fire crews say it happened around 11 o'clock along Third Avenue. That's where we spoke with Willis Brown about what happened.
"I heard a weird boom boom boom biddy boom," said Willis Brown.
That's when Willis Brown says when he looked outside and saw a group of teens scrambling on the front porch of the house next door, which he owns. He's been renovating it in hopes of renting it out soon.
"One of them jumped the fence that threw water on the fire and hollered "it's on fire! can't get it out." Jumped the fence, ran down the street," said Brown.
Brown says they scattered, but he stayed up waiting to see if they'd come back around. And when they did a couple hours later, he confronted them.
"I hollered at them, 'come here.' You know? And they said 'Oh we haven't been shooting firecrackers. We got witnesses where we're at.' No, that was part of the gang," said Willis.
Brown says he expects to shell out about $20,000 to fix the damage, which is a major setback in his renovation project.
"I regret even having to confront my neighbor about this mess, but somebody's going to have to pay. I know I'm going to be number 1."
Brown hoped to have the house ready to rent out by next summer. If you know anything about who was involved in the crime, call police.
