Police Arrest Westview Elementary Vandal
Students and teachers at Westview Elementary School will return to school Wednesday after deputies arrested a man for vandalizing the school building early Tuesday morning.
That's after the damage was so bad, school officials were forced to cancel classes for the day. The damage inside totalled $60,000.
5th grader Jeremiah Chopane was home from school Tuesday, but not by choice. All afternoon, maintenance workers were busy inside Westview Elementary where there was broken windows, glass shattered everywhere, ceiling tiles destroyed, and bathrooms left a mess.
"It made me a little mad because I was thinking that teachers would have been there and I was thinking that he probably could have hurt somebody," said Jeremiah Chopane.
But no one was hurt. After a struggle, deputies arrested 22-year-old Aaron Roden of Franklin, Tennessee at the school. This was after a burglar alarm went off. They tell us he forced his way inside by throwing bricks at several windows. Then once inside, he went on a rampage, vandalizing mostly the kindergarten and first grade hallway.
"He shouldn't have a reason to just go in and do that to a school," said 5th grader Jackson Flemmons.
It's still not clear what connection Roden has to Westview elementary. School officials say this appears to be an isolated incident.
"There are no vending machines in the hallways at Westview, there is no money left in the school overnight, so to me and what I saw, this is just simply an act of vandalism," said superintendent Rick Smith.
But, this act of vandalism has left parents uneasy.
"You have those parents that do go to work everyday and they're having to stay off of work to take care of their children or go out of their way to try to find some people to watch their children so they can work," said Ashley Flemmons.
And students confused by this chaos.
"I feel kind of sad and mad because of the school. Like how would it happen?" questions Chopane.
After doing some digging, we found out that Roden was out of jail on bond after being arrested on an aggravated assault charge from just last week.
