Furnace Explosion & Fire Injures Employees
A furnace explosion and fire injured six, hospitalized three, and kept firefighters busy Friday morning.
The explosion happened at about 7:15 a.m. at Designed Alloy at the 3300 block of Alton Park Boulevard in Chattanooga.
Firefighters tell us 6 people were hurt. Three were transported to the hospital. One of those transported had serious burns. The other two had smoke inhalation.
It took firefighters about 25 minutes to get the blaze under control. No word yet on the fire's cause.
Designed Alloy sells and sorts scrap metal. It also melts metals in two 5-ton furnaces. There were a lot of chemical drums and tanks near the building, making the task of controlling the fire a little more of a challenge for firefighters. Employees tell us this is the first fire of its kind at the plant.
