A 3-year-old is severely abused and it took a police investigation to find out that she wasn't the only child in the house who was abused.
A local doctor says she's frustrated that this type of child abuse is so prevalent.
Doctor Annamaria Church says far too many kids are rolling into the emergency room suffering from severe child abuse.
On average, Dr. Church says 2 children are admitted each week, and for her, that's too many.
"It gets to the point that what can we do what can we say so that people stop hurting their children," said Dr. Church.
According to the police report, 34-year-old Rhasean Lowry was living at the Econo Lodge motel on Bonny Oaks Drive with his girlfriend and her 3-small kids. Hotel management told NewsChannel 9 that they were at the motel for 8 days.
The investigation began Tuesday after Lowry reportedly brought the kids to the hospital looking for help.
He left the kids inside the car by themselves while he went inside.
Lowry told police that his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter fell down the stairs, but doctors say the injuries were much more severe and not consistent with a fall. Instead, police believe Lowry was abusing her.
Meanwhile, investigators say the girl's 5-year-old brother told them he was abused by Lowry. He had several bruises as well.
Doctor Church says these types of cases are heartbreaking.
"I've been in this field for 30 something years and you hope you make a difference, but it seems like over and over and over again, these kids are coming in badly injured," said Dr. Church.
Shakara Wynne lives in Chattanooga, has a 6-year-ols, and says now she's more aware about her child's safety.
"It's sad because it's like you don't know who you can trust these days and especially if that's your spouse you want to make sure they have your best interest at heart, especially your kids," said Wynne.
Lowry denies any abuse to the kids.
According to police reports, those kids are in state's custody. Lowry has no prior criminal history in Hamilton County. He's due in court next Tuesday.
Lowry is being charged with Aggravated Child Abuse and Child Abuse and Neglect. He remains in jail on a $100,000 dollars bond.
