A Hixson family mourns the loss of a son and their daughter is critically injured from a crash this morning.
Three teenagers were riding together in a pickup truck when the crash happened.
Chattanooga police said the teenage driver lost control of the truck, rolled and then hit a large tree. All three teenagers were ejected.
From what NewsChannel 9 has learned, the three teenagers were students at Hixson High School. And the crash happened on Adams Road near the Marsh Lane intersection sometime before 9:00 a.m.
A time they normally would've been in school, but were out because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The crash ejected and killed the 15-year-old boy.
This afternoon, a group of teenage friends stopped at the scene and looked at the tree the truck smashed into. Jacob Stalyon reflected, "All I know is I've lost one of my friends to it. It's sad, a 15-year-old dead."
Collin Huffman, 15 years old himself, reflected on the life of his friend. "He was laid back, he was fine with everyone, didn't have a problem, good kid and everything."
The victim's 16-year-old sister and the 17-year-old boy in the truck were also ejected. NewsChannel 9 asked Chattanooga police traffic Sgt. David Gibb if any of the teenagers were buckled in? Gibb responded, "It's fairly safe to say no."
Gibb went on to explain the early findings of the investigation, "Preliminary investigation shows that they went off the road to the right side, then over corrected and went off the left side, then the vehicle went into a flip and struck a tree."
The truck left the road after coming out of a curve on Adams Road, and police suspect another cause. Gibb said, "Speed appears to be a factor, yes."
Nearby, Zack King and his construction team were working on a house they're building. King saw the aftermath of the crash and soon learned about the teen losing his life. "I actually called my wife and told her about it. Just say a prayer for the family, It's about all you can do at this point," King said.
For the group of teenagers who came back out to the crash site, when school resumes tomorrow, a key friend will be missing. Kyle Stalyon reflected on his friendship with the victim and his sister, "When they started coming to the middle school, I started riding their bus with my friend, getting dropped off at his house and I met him. They were some good kids," Stalyon said.
At the latest check, the 16-year-old girl remained in critical condition. The 17-year-old boy was still being assessed as of this report. Police indicate he had minor injuries.
