Why Did Some Schools Close Monday?

Better safe, than sorry. That's how school officials in Whitfield County, Georgia handled what some may have thought would be a repeat of the snow ten days ago.

Classes in the county and city of Dalton were dismissed Monday around the lunch hour. We found parents lining up at Northwest Whitfield High to pick up their kids.

In all more than 13,000 children got a surprise half-day off. All because a few pellets of sleet, along with a few flakes of snow started flying.

Officials wanted to be safe because the last time they waited to cancel class more than a week ago some roads had already gotten icy.

Step dad Tommy Massengill said "my step son did not get home until 6:30 that evening so that's why we're being more proactive than reactive."

The spits of sleet and flurries didn't last long and there no were accumulations in north Georgia today.
