Eric Berry's Younger Brother Commits to Vols

Evan Berry Will Be in the 9th Grade this Fall

Associated Press

The brother of Tennessee safety Eric Berry says he's accepted a scholarship offer to play for the Volunteers, without having played a single down of high school football.

Thirteen-year-old Evan Berry will be a ninth-grader at Creekside High School in Fairburn, Ga., in the fall and is expected to play quarterback and safety like his brother.

He told recruiting Web site Rivals.com that he thinks Tennessee seems the best for him and he wants to play for defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

Berry would first be eligible to play for Tennessee in 2013, the fifth year in coach Lane Kiffin's six-year contract. Monte Kiffin signed a three-year contract in January, which wouldn't guarantee he would still be on staff if both Berry and Tennessee honor the commitment.

Technically, schools can't submit "official" offers until September. 1 of a player's junior year in high school, which is still three  years away for the younger Berry, and neither a school or a recruit is bound to an "offer" or "commitment" until there's an actual signature on signing day, which is still four-and-a-half years away for Evan Berry.

So, essentially, there's nothing binding in Evan's verbal committment.  He wants to go to Tennessee, where his brother now plays and where his father, James, played.  He plans to go to Tennessee.  But who knows if this now middle schooler will even be interested in playing football in four years.
