Former Vol Signs with Chattanooga
Former East Ridge High School star Phillip Jurick signed scholarship papers to join the Chattanooga men’s basketball program head coach John Shulman announced on Friday. Jurick signs with the Mocs from Chattanooga State Community College after spending a redshirt season with the University of Tennessee in 2008-09.
Jurick will join the Mocs as a sophomore after playing this season for Jay Price at CSTCC. According to Shulman, he is a throwback player with his size in the post.
“He is a high major big man at 6-11, 275 pounds,” said Shulman. “He’s can rebound and defend, but he can also score the ball and has an ‘NBA’ jump hook.
“We are thrilled to keep a local product home,” added Shulman who is entering his sixth season. “Unfortunately, we were not very involved with him in his initial recruitment. It came down to Indiana and Tennessee and we were not able to get in there and that’s fine.
“We didn’t really get to know him until this recruiting period and he is a fine young man,” noted Shulman. “One thing that really impressed me is his maturation as a person and player.”
Jurick was rated a four-star recruit coming out of East Ridge by Rivals.com and Scout.com with Rivals.com ranking him No. 68 in the 2008 recruiting class. He scored a grade of 92 with Scouts, Inc., on espn.com. He averaged 17.8 points, 15.9 rebounds and eight blocks per game as a senior for the Pioneers where he played for former Mocs assistant Jon Goddard.
