Big Time Prospect Plays First Game In Front of Lookouts Fans
Earlier this season, Dodgers phenom pitcher Clayton Kershaw stopped in Chattanooga on a rehabilitation assignment.
Now, the Lookouts have caught a Dodgers prospect on the rise: Corey Seager. The 6'4" shortstop comes with substantial credentials.
The Dodgers selected him in the first round (18th) of the 2012 draft out of Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, NC. He was named the Gatorade 2012 Player of the Year in North Carolina and a Baseball America first-team All American.
In 80 games with the single high-A Rancho Cucamonga, California Quakes, Seager put up impressive numbers. That includes 18 home runs, a .352 batting average and 70 rbi.
The move up to AA ball hasn't yet sunk in. "I haven't gotten enough experience with it to really be able to tell the difference between the two levels. Hopefully, the next couple of days, I'll be able to figure it out a little bit," Seager said.
He comes from a strong family of baseball. His oldest brother is Kyle Seager, the star player for the Seattle Mariners. Corey said his older brother told him to treat every league like the big leagues.
As far as all the buzz surrounding him as one of the top players in the Dodgers' system, Seager stays close to the ground. "To be honest, I don't pay too much attention. I don't want to get caught up in all that stuff. I just kind of want to go out and play."
In his first bat at AT&T Field, Seager did just that. He hit an opposite field shot to the wall for a stand-up double. Lookouts fans can only hope that's a sign of things to come, at least for a little while.
