Lady Mocs Championship Bound
The UTC Lady Mocs are championship bound in the Southern Conference basketball tournament.
And they got there in resounding fashion with a dominant 77-44 win over Elon Phoenix.
When asked if this was the best performance of the year, Lady Mocs coach Jim Foster said, "We played fairly well." After a few seconds, Foster emphasized, "We played hard, real hard."
Taylor Hall led all scoters with 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Ashlen Dewart had a solid game, scoring 14 points from down low.
But an emerging story from the Lady Mocs through this tournament has been the strong play of reserves.
Jasmine Joyner didn't miss a shot from the field, finishing with nine points. Meghan Downes chipped in eight points, including two three-pointers.
The team and coach don't think of the reserves as bench players but more as an extension of depth. As Hall put it the team can play 11 or 12 players, "and not miss a beat."
Consider this: in its two tournament games, the Lady Mocs haven't trailed at any point in either game. Coach Foster said defensive adjustments over the past two weeks are paying dividends.
The Lady Mocs looked razor sharp Sunday afternoon. They've also displayed poise and depth, key ingredients for tomorrow evening's championship game.
The Lady Mocs will play the Davidson Wildcats in the SoCon championship tomorrow evening at 5:00.
