The UTC Lady Mocs were gunning for the 19th straight win Monday when they squared off against Davidson in the Southern Conference tournament championship game in Asheville. It was the Lady Mocs first championship game since they won it in 20-10. which was their 9th in Wes Moore's 15 seasons as head coach.
The Lady Mocs a perfect 13-0 record in SoCon tournament championship games.
This was the third matchup of the season between the regular-season champion Lady Mocs and second-place Wildcats... UTC winning by 4 points at Davidson in January, by 9 at the Roundhouse two weeks ago.
A good start for the Lady Mocs, going inside to Ashlen Dewart... they led by 4.
But Davidson found their shooting touch... a 7-0 run put them on top. The Lady Mocs tied it at 20 but a 12-5 run to end the first half stretched the Wildcats lead to 5.
Davidson's lead grew to double digits early in the second half before the Lady Mocs started their comeback.
Taylor Hall taking charge, getting the Lady Mocs within 2 with 8:15 left. Hall scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the second half.
Hall's three-ball with 6 minutes to go tied the game at 54.
It was tied at 58 when Laura Murray scored 5 straight points for a 63-58 lead.
Five straight Hall points, and an offensive foul call on Davidson, gave the Lady Mocs the ball, down a point, with 20 seconds left.
With 10 seconds left... Dewart missed a shot, got the rebound, missed the shot, but Kayla Christopher was there to tip it in for a 64-63 lead with eight seconds left.
Davidson couldn't get a good shot to win it... and the Lady Mocs are headed to the NCAA tournament for the 11th time.... 64-63 they beat Davidson.
Dewart, who scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, was named the tournment MVP.
Kylie Lambert, the senior out of McMinn Central, got engaged on the court after the game. Grant Brown of Athens proposed, Kylie said yes!
