Lady Vols Lose World Series Opener
By Darrell Patterson
The Tennessee Lady Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners squared off Monday night in Oklahoma City in game one of their best of three softball World Series championship series.
The Lady Vols are in finals for the second time... coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly's 2007 squad lost to Arizona in three games. This is the second straight championship series for the Sooners... they lost to Alabama a year ago.
The series opener was a brilliant pitcher's duel between the Lady Vols' Ellen Renfroe and the Sooners Keilani Ricketts.
Through nine scoreless innings, Renfro have up only three hits and struck out 12. Keilani Rickets of Oklahoma had 13 strikeouts and gave up only five hits.
One of those hits was a Madison Shipman three-run homer in the top of the 11th inning. But the Sooners pushed across three runs in the bottom of the 11th, then won it in the 12th on a Loren Chamberlain two-run homer.
Oklahoma wins the best of three series opener 5-3. They'll play game two Tuesday night.
