The Chattanooga Mocs, who got blown out by UNC-Greensboro twice during the regular season, got a rematch with the Spartans Friday night in the opening round of the Southern Conference tournament in Asheville.
The Mocs, who finished 5th in the north division, one notch ahead of Greensboro, got off to a fantastic start! Shots by Z Mason, Drazen Zlovarich and Ronrico White were falling, and they did a good job defensively on Trevis Simpson and Nicholas Paulos, who burned them big time in those regular-season matchups.
The Mocs were up 10-2 early. They ran the lead to 11 points before the Spartans made a run. But the Mocs matched each Greensboro run with one of their own, and led 43-32 at the half.
Greensboro started the second half with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 3. The Mocs countered and got that lead back up to 11.
Derrell Armstrong, who scored only 3 first-half points, was unstoppable in the second half.
He scored 22 in the second half, giving the Spartans their first lead with just under 7 minutes to go. They stretched the lead to 9... the Mocs cut it to 2, but that was all she wrote.
Greensboro, who did not win a game this season when they trailed at halftime, overcomes an 11 point deficit to beat the Mocs 87-81.
Junior Z Mason scored 20, sophomore Ronrico White had 19, freshman Casey Jones 11 for the Mocs, who wind up the season with a 13-19 record... their third straight season with a losing record.Mocs One-And-Done at SoCon Tournament
