Ricky Ross has been hired as the head football coach of the South Pittsburg Pirates, replacing Vic Grider, who stepped down in December after coaching at his alma mater for 16 seasons.
Grider, whose Pirates teams won three class 1A state championships, is still South Pittsburg's athletic director, and headed up the committee that whittled nearly 150 applicants down to three finalists before choosing Ross.
For the past five years, the 38-year old Ross has coached at Calhoun High School in Georgia, serving as Hal Lamb's defensive coordinator, and helping build a Yellow Jackets program into Georgia's best in class 1A, reaching the state championship game in each of the last five seasons, winning the 2011 title.
Ross, whose wife, Sandy is a graduate of Marion County High School in Jasper, becomes only the fourth South Pittsburgh head football coach in the past 50 years. Grider's father, Don, won 192 games and a state championship between 1969 and 1992, Danny Wilson coached from 1993 to 1996, winning a state championship. Vic Grider became the Pirates head coach after the 1996 season.
