SBA Senior Signs for Fishing Scholarship at Bryan College
Cody Thomas, a senior at Chattanooga's Silverdale Baptist Academy
, has signed scholarship papers to fish on Bryan College's
inaugural bass fishing team, according to SBA fishing coach Brent Brady.
Brady said Thomas will receive $10,000 a year toward his cost to attend the Christian college in Dayton, Tenn.
Bryan College fishing coach Mike Keen said a fishing team was a natural fit for the school.
"We’re right across the road from the Dayton Boat Dock," Keen said. "This year, we’re building our team. Hopefully next year, we’ll be fishing. I feel we hit a home run with Cody. I’d like to have 10 or 12 more like him. It’s easy to find kids who want to come and fish, but not as easy finding kids like Cody, who are serious about an education and who love the Lord and want to grow spiritually."
Brady said collegiate fishing
is becoming more popular each year, and an increasing number of schools are offering scholarships for their fishing teams.
Thomas will be fishing this year for the second-year fishing team at SBA. He also plays football and baseball for the Seahawks but had no idea that fishing would be his path to college.
"It’s really neat how everything worked out," Thomas said. "God let everything come together."
Brady, who has fished professionally for 30 years said, "This is exciting to me. These kids can’t play football or baseball all their lives, but they can fish the rest of their lives."Photo: (From left to right) Silverdale fishing team sponsor Al Rogers, Bryan scholarship recipient Cody Thomas and Silverdale Baptist Academy fishing coach Brent Brady.
