UPDATE: Preseason Praise for Mocs at SoCon Media Event in SC
The SoCon Media Day wrapped this afternoon and the consensus is in.
The UTC Mocs are the preseason favorite to win the conference. The media thought so and so did the coaches.
The Mocs fell just short of the FCS playoffs last year. Two key players and coach Russ Huesman said they plan to be there this season.
The Mocs finished as So-Con co-champions last year, but didn't make the playoffs. That stung and left them with a strong hunger this year.
Coach Russ Huesman said, "I think what defined our season was when we sat in that room and our name wasn't called for the playoffs. I hope our guys remember that, realize it."
That realization has grown through the spring and summer.
Senior running back Keon Williams noted, "If we beat every team in the SoCon, beat every FCS team, I feel like we have a great shot."
Senior defensive end Davis Tull, SoCon defensive player of the year, wants more than a conference championship. He wants to go out a national champion. Tull said, "I am confident, but if we don't put in the work, we won't sniff it."
Huesman noted the strength of this team is well known, "To be honest with you, our strength is upfront, both sides of the ball. I think everybody knows we've got some quality defensive linemen."
He added the secondary is the thinnest unit, but he's hoping for players to step up. "It's going to take a little bit of everything. Chemistry, coaching, playing, making plays, work ethic. It's going to take all those things. We got to do just a little bit more than what we had last year," said Huesman.
