Dozens of local high school football players signed letters of intent to play college football Wednesday... in most cases, those guys had made verbal committments well in advance.
But not Vonn Bell.
The top-50-ranked safety and slot-receiver from Ridgeland had narrowed his choices to Tennessee, Ohio State and Alabama.
And in many folks mind, Bell called an audible when he announced his decision to be a Buckeye.
A few folks in the room.. Bell's family, maybe his coaches and some of his teammates, knew about Vonn's decision before his announcement, but for most others, this was a shock. The feeling was he would either choose Alabama, joining the two-time-defending national champions, or, most likely, go with the Vols, the team he grew up a big fan of. And while he thinks new head coach Butch Jones WILL turn the Vols around, he chose not to be a part of or wait on that turnaround.
