UTC Tops Among SoCon Schools

UTC Sports Information

The National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) updated the standings in the Division I Learfield Sports Director's Cup this weekend and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has cracked the top-100 in the rankings.

The Mocs are currently in 97th place with a total of 180.5 points.  The Learfield Sports Director's Cup was developed in 1994 as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today to honor athletic departments for their success in all NCAA Sports.

Points are awarded based on a school's finish at the NCAA Championships.  Athletic departments can score points in up to 20 sports, 10 women's and 10 men's.

UTC is coming off its best finish in school history, placing 134th in 2008.  The Mocs scored 125.5 points last season, which was their previous high until topping that mark in 2009.

Chattanooga scored points in five sports, including wrestling (51st place - 21.5 points), men's basketball (T33rd - 25 points), men's golf (18th - 56 points), women's golf (21st - 53 points) and softball (T49th - 25 points).

The Division I race will not conclude until June 26 following the baseball championships, but Stanford has already clinched its 15th consecutive Directors' Cup.  With only the baseball scores left to factor into the equation, the Mocs should only drop one space to 98th

Chattanooga leads all Southern Conference schools with Furman next in line in 158th (83 points).  Other SoCon schools include UNC Greensboro (162nd - 70 points), Appalachian State (184th - 65 points), Western Carolina (197th - 50 points), College of Charleston (222nd - 40 points), Wofford (233rd - 25 points), Georgia Southern (262nd - 16 points) and The Citadel (266th - 5 points).  Georgia Southern and Elon will add to their totals based on their appearances in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

The Mocs are 32nd among non-BCS teams and rank ahead of seven schools in BCS conferences, including Mississippi State (98th), St. John's (110th), Cincinnati (124th), Washington State (133rd), DePaul (168th), Marquette (168th) and Seton Hall (265th).
