Hudson Brilliant as Braves Beat Marlins in Florida

July 23, 2008 - 10:06 PM

Fans have been treated to some brilliant pitching in this week's Braves-Marlins game in Florida.

Jorge Campillo and the Braves shutout the Marlins 4-0 Monday night... the Marlins getting only 2 hits. Rick VandenHurk and the Marlins combined on a 1-hitter in their 4-0 win Tuesday night.

Tim Hudson pitched a beauty in Wednesday night's series finale. Hudson gave up a leadoff double, then retired the next 11 batters in a row. Hudson retires 18 of the last 21 batters he faces... he faces 22 batters in 6 innings of work... gets 18 of them out... gives up 3 hits... walks one... struck out 6.

Huddie turned a 6-0 lead over to the bullpen, leaving the game with tightness in his right elbow.

Two of the Braves runs scored in the 3rd inning on a Yunel Escobar double and a Chipper Jones groundout.  Chipper left the game in the 4th inning after injuring his left hamstring running out a ground.

Three more Braves run scored in the fourth inning on a Kelly Johnson double, a Gregor Blanco single and another Escobar double, then a Brian McCann 7th inning rbi single. Blanco's two-run triple and an Escobar groundout in the 8th made it 9-0 Braves.

The Marlins avoided the shutout when they scored 4 runs off of Buddy Carlyle before Mike Gonzalez got the final 2 outs in a 9-4 win for the Braves, who'll play the division-leading Phillies in Philadelphia this weekend.
